Weekend Eats (and Drinks)

in personal,weekend eats and drinks

This weekend was not even close to being typical.

For starters, Mike took the train down to NYC on Friday, and when I arrived home that evening via a very delayed train, it was just me and the girls. They had crunchies and treats. I had wine and leftover pasta.

breakfast for one

I awoke on Saturday morning, showered and dressed, and fortified myself for the long day ahead with a big breakfast: warm tortillas, leftover black beans, roasted poblanos and potatoes, topped off with a fried egg and some hot sauce.

Then I picked up a Zipcar and headed down to New York myself.

Several hours later, I had picked up Mike, and we turned around and headed back to lil’ Rhody in the rain. But we weren’t alone.

'morning!

His full name is Jack Kirby Hussein Dietsch, but we’re calling him Kirby for short. And he is amazing.

helping!

As you can see, he fits right in.

(More photos, and a couple of videos, are here; the full story is here. Many, many thanks to the folks from Brooklyn’s Empty Cages Collective for rescuing and taking such good care of this little guy and his littermates – not to mention for their efforts in helping so many other animals in need. They’re my heroes.)

Now back to the food! Now that this is all behind us, expect regular posting to resume. Or what passes for “regular” around these parts. And stay tuned for a very special giveaway!

Oh, man, that’s amazing! – what a name…

I’m so happy for you guys. A new furry face. I have kitten envy. Estorbo needs a brother…

( I also love to see laptops in the context of their owners’ lives – thank you)

And thanks for the signature egg.

:-)

What a sweetie-pie!!! He looks just like my boy “Sparky” did when he was that young! I had 17 wonderful years with my “Sparker” & miss him still so much. Other readers have commented on the unique personalities of ginger tabbies…it’s so true, they are amazing…especially the males! I wish you both many great moments with Kirby. I went to your website & watched the videos you took…cracked up laughing at the one of him on the climbing post thingy…too funny!!! Enjoy the little darling & please give him some pats & love from me!

I’ve been enjoying your blog for some time, and had to comment – orange tabby cats are the absolute best and I’m thrilled for you! He looks delightful.

Oh I am so happy for you, Mike and the girls. He’s absolutely adorable. And in the kitchen already. A perfect match!

Such cuteness in one tiny package! It’s nice to know he travelled so well from NY to RI, too. This little sprite is going to add a lot of laughs and activity to your household–enjoy!

Hey Jen,
I’m a long-time lurker who had to come out of the woodwork to congratulate you on your new addition. My husband and I got a second kitten this weekend as well and would you believe we considered Hussein as his name? We settled on gnocchi (the shelter folks had called him “nookie”).

oh my. you’ve made my day w/ these pictures of your new family member. and he’s from brooklyn! hells yeah! that cat will not be afraid of anything and be extremely lovable (with a sometimes “hard” exterior). and he also likes to fold his pizza when he eats it (if you didn’t know that already).

Adorable! Like WANF, you’ve really made my day with those photos.

By the way, my 6-year-old cat is giving me the stink-eye right now for getting all kitty-nostalgic.

Thanks so much, everyone! He is an absolute delight, and wouldn’t you know it, he *loves* to eat. :D
